ARC received in exchange of honest review.

I received the ARC via TRSOR, as usual. I liked the cover enough, and so I set out reading this book. I have to admit 9 Letters is not my usual cup of tea, because it is different from the other romance books I've read and reviewed.

"I met the love of my life, and then thought she was the only chance I had to be happy. Then she died. And now? Now I'm learning a whole new way to be happy."

The story starts on the first anniversary of Emily's death. Luke Cawley has been sinking in his despair and grief, and he doesn't cope well. Imagine his surprise that he got a package of 9 letters from his dead wife. Each one is written by Emily, telling Luke how to deal with his grief and starting to move on. So with a heavy heart, Luke does what Emily wants him to do: moving on. Or trying to, anyway.

Random: 5 Non-Romantic Covers for Romance Novels

To read my first post, click: Bookish-Style Valentine's Day Mixtapes

I always learned not to judge too much on the covers. I mean, sometimes I was flabbergasted because the book with the most unasuming cover has the most controversial (or just plain weird) story.

But then, there are books with the most simple covers. There are no half-naked buff guys, couples hugging or kissing, and no guys with the most smoldering bedroom eyes. And because I was bored as hell, I'm giving you all the most simple covers for the most romantic romance novels on my list.

1. Ink & Lies by S.L. Jennings (read my Review)

This is one of the most beautiful love stories I've read, about a guy who's in love with his bestfriend--his engaged bestie. And the cover is kinda pretty, a heart with Post-Its, pen, coffee, and crumpled papers. I think this is the prettiest cover I've ever seen.

BLURB:
From New York Times Bestselling Author, Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

Sharing a summer house with a hot-as-hell roommate should be a dream come true, right?

Not when it’s Justin…the only person I’d ever loved…who now hates me.

When my grandmother died and left me half of the house on Aquidneck Island, there was a catch: the other half would go to the boy she helped raise.

The same boy who turned into the teenager whose heart I broke years ago.

The same teenager who’s now a man with a hard body and a hardass personality to match.

I hadn’t seen him in years, and now we’re living together because neither one of us is willing to give up the house.

The worst part? He didn’t come alone.

I’d soon realize there’s a thin line between love and hate. I could see through that smug smile. Beneath it all…the boy is still there. So is our connection.

The problem is…now that I can’t have Justin, I’ve never wanted him more.

Author's note – RoomHate is a full-length standalone novel. Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Bookish Soundtrack #6: Bookish-Style Valentine's Day Mixtapes (+BBI Post)

Okay, so yesterday was Valentine's Day. Because I'm single and the only boyfriends I currently have stay in the USA and between the pages, I went to a mall in central Surabaya and ate sushi for dinner. With my brother, so sue me :p

Today we're supposed to make a post about Valentine. Making a romance review sounds so boring, I do that all the time, so I'm making some mixtapes. I did a mixtape for my friend a few weeks ago, and she (and her boyfriend) had a blast. And this time, my mixtapes don't only consist of songs. Books too, because, well, it's bookish-style.

Happy Valentine!

Mixtape #1: Falling in Love

Desc: When you fall in love, sky get bluer, life gets cheerier, and even the most shitty day turns into a good one. Well, okay, it's a bit cheesy, if I say so myself. Here, I'll give you some songs and some books to add the mood.

Book Tour: Ink & Lies by S.L. Jennings

INK & LIES IS NOW LIVE!

BLURB:
From International Best Selling Romance Novelist, Hope Hughes, comes a gripping, heartfelt tale of two lovers, fighting for the freedom to…

No. Scratch that. Too cheesy.

…two people, torn apart by the tumultuous tides of life, only to discover refuge in…

WTF? What does that even mean? DELETE.

…two people, confused as shit as to where they should be and who they should love and none of this means a damn thing because it’s all lies!
Lies.
I’m not Hope Hughes. I’m not some fierce woman romance machine. Hell, I’m not even a woman.
I’m a liar.
And while I refuse to believe my own BS, deceit masked in heartfelt phrases of love and devotion, I want to make her believe them. Because maybe—just maybe—if she can find the soul within my words, she’ll also be able to find the truth scribbled on my heart.
You see, I once lived for the perfect plot twist.
I just never expected to actually live it.
This is my story. Well, maybe her story. I just wish I could make it our story.
The one I’m still writing.

BLURB:
I’m rescuer. It’s in my DNA.

Stray dogs. Stray women.

But this one doesn’t need rescuing.

She needs something real, but I never keep the ones I rescue.

I could let her go… but I can’t watch her walk away.

I’m an ex-Navy SEAL, and I never give up on a mission.

Bait & Switch is Book 1 in the new contemporary romance series Alphas Undone, which will each feature a new couple. This is a standalone full-length novel.

Just as I was finishing Legend, I saw this book. So I got it. The blurb intrigued me, and I wanted to see what's gonna happen with the hero and heroine. I know Kendall previously writes romantic comedies or straightforward romance, and I figured this book would be different, with more suspense and different angle of a relationship.

This entire situation was the definition of a clusterfuck.

In Bait & Switch, things are getting confusing for Nolan Maxwell. He's an ex-Navy SEAL and now works in private security. He's in a domestic relationship with a sub, Daniella, but he feels things for Lacey. Things he doesn't really want to feel and love, because for Nolan, feelings only lead to heartbreak. He can't stop wanting Lacey, though. But he's not ready to admit that these feelings are growing bigger and greater everytime he spends time with Lacey.

Sometimes our greatest scars are the ones we don't wear for the world to see. They're buried inside our hearts.

Maverick “the Avenger” Cage wants to rise to the top and become a legend in the ring. Though he keeps his identity well guarded, he's known on the fighting circuit as the new kid with a chip on his shoulder and a tattoo on his back that marks him as trouble. He's got a personal score to settle with the Underground's one and only Remington "Riptide" Tate.

As Mav trains, he meets a young girl—the only other new person in the town--and sparks fly. When things get heated between them, he finds out she's none other than Reese Dumas, the cousin of Remington Tate’s wife. A girl who's supposed to root against him and a girl he's supposed to stay away from.

But Maverick fights for the woman in his heart, and the monsters in his blood. The world’s eyes are on them and the victor will go down in history as the ultimate fighting champion; the ultimate LEGEND.

The highly anticipated sixth story in the New York Times bestselling series that began with Real—“a rare mix of fevered obsession and gentle enchantment…a visceral and addicting debut” (Christina Lauren).

I haven't had a chance to really read Real book 2-5. One thing led to another and then the books will end up in my TBR longer than I wanted to. But Legend is a wishlist because it's the end of the series.

But we both know nothing is forever, except legends. Except us.

Maverick Cage, nicknamed The Avenger, has a personal score to settle with Remington "Riptide" Tate (book 1-3). As the son of someone Remi has defeated, the fight is in his blood. It's unexpected that the girl who captures his sight is someone related to Remi. His mission is still the same: defeat Remi in The Underground where he reigns as a king. He needs to do this for himself. But his feelings are strong, Mav can't help but fight for Reese as well.

“My mind goes in all directions but it ends up in the same place: her. Her watching me fight. Her in a nice room with me. On a nice bed. And me, kissing her in a very un-nice way. Hearing her make noises that are the opposite of nice. And I still think of that nice girl who doesn’t want to be nice. A girl who wants to be unforgettable and doesn’t realize, she already is.”

Reese Dumas only wanted to renew herself. Being attracted to this unknown fighter is not in her plans. But she can't help herself, even after knowing who Mav is and what will happen next. So she also fights for him and with him for their future.

Ink & Lies first captured my attention because the cover was (and is) beautiful. The heart looks complicated, consists of several things that I suspect make it whole.

The most epic love story I’ve ever written is the one I’m still living.

And it was a painful journey in reading this book. Painful, but so satisfying and so beautiful too. We are taken to the life of August Rhys Calloway, a guy who writes romance---and successful, too. Rhys and Fiona Shaw have been best friends for a decade. Together they've been each other's everything---confidante, shoulders to cry one, chill-mate. Their friendship is going fine and dandy. Until it changes.

See, they are the typical besties. Friendly banter, sarcastic, and funny as hell too. But there are undercurrent feelings between them. And now Rhys has to show Fi that she's his everything, before he lose her for good. Before he has to face a future without Fiona.

I wish you to know that you have been the last dream of my soul.

BLURB:
In this modern-retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Savannah Carmichael, betrayed by an unreliable source, returns to her hometown of Danvers, Virginia with her once-promising journalism career in ruins. Given the opportunity to get back in the game by writing a patriotic human interest piece, Savannah turns her attention to the town hermit, Asher Lee, a wounded veteran who returned to Danvers eight years ago, and hasn’t been seen since.

After an IED explosion in Afghanistan took Asher’s hand and disfigured half of his face, he's lived a quiet life on the outskirts of Danvers where the locals respect his privacy…that is, until Savannah Carmichael comes calling in a borrowed sundress with a plate of homemade brownies. When Asher agrees to be interviewed by Savannah, he starts feeling things for the beautiful reporter that he hasn’t felt in years.

Misfits in small-town Danvers, Savannah and Asher create a bond right away, touching each other’s hearts in ways neither thought possible. When a terrible mistake threatens to drive them apart, they’ll have to decide if the love they found in one another’s arms is strong enough to fight for their hard-won happily ever after.

It all started with a venture to several Facebook pages. I stumbled into m.a.k, a group by three authors Mia Sheridan, A.L. Jackson, and Katy Regnery. I loved Mia's works, so I thought, alrighty, I'll join then. And then I got curious. In this case, curiosity didn't kill me ;)

“The problem with hope was that you were required to acknowledge the possibility of not getting what you desperately hoped for.”

The Vixen and The Vet follows the story of Savannah Carmichael, a good Southern girl with a determination to make it in the journalism world. When things became a good clusterfuck, she comes back home to Danvers, Virginia. A chance to ressurect her career is present when she's offered to make a report on human interest. So she turns to Asher Lee, the recluse of Danvers.

Asher was scarred by the war--literally. His face is half-disfigured by an IED explosion, and his hand is gone. Almost a decade, he lives but closes himself off. So he's surprised to see the beautiful girl standing on his porch, bringing food, wanting an interview with him.
"Yes, I do. I scare little children. Hell, I scare adults."
"You don't scare me."
"You're an alien."
"You sure know how to flatter a girl."

BLURB:
The new novel featuring homicide detective Eve Dallas from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Devoted in Death.

Sometimes brotherhood can be another word for conspiracy. . . .

Dennis Mira just had two unpleasant surprises. First he learned that his cousin Edward was secretly meeting with a real estate agent about their late grandfather’s magnificent West Village brownstone, despite the promise they both made to keep it in the family. Then, when he went to the house to confront Edward about it, he got a blunt object to the back of the head.

Luckily Dennis is married to Charlotte Mira, the NYPSD’s top profiler and a good friend of Lieutenant Eve Dallas. When the two arrive on the scene, he explains that the last thing he saw was Edward in a chair, bruised and bloody. When he came to, his cousin was gone. With the mess cleaned up and the security disks removed, there’s nothing left behind but a few traces for forensics to analyze.

As a former lawyer, judge, and senator, Edward Mira mingled with the elite and crossed paths with criminals, making enemies on a regular basis. Like so many politicians, he also made some very close friends behind closed—and locked—doors. But a badge and a billionaire husband can get you into places others can’t go, and Eve intends to shine some light on the dirty deals and dark motives behind the disappearance of a powerful man, the family discord over a multimillion-dollar piece of real estate . . . and a new case that no one saw coming.

In Death has always been my comfort read. When I got into the worst slump last year, I resorted back to In Death. Eve Dallas and Roarke are the sure bet. This time, knowing Dennis Mira will play a major role, I perked up. Dennis is one of my favorite characters, so calm but so adorable XD

On a cold afternoon of January 2061, Dennis Mira went to his grandfather's estate to settle things with his cousin, Edward Mira. Instead of finding him an a real estate agent, Dennis found Edward beaten before someone renders him unconscious. Upon waking up, Edward is gone, and Dennis has no choice but to call his wife, Charlotte Mira, and asks for Eve's help.

But Edward's disappearance seems to be the tip of the iceberg. Eve finds proofs of a heinous crime, perpetrated by Edward and his brotherhood from college days. They will pay, and this investigation is hitting too close to Eve's own nightmare. With Roarke's help, and the support of her partner and department, Eve must find the killers before somebody dies.

"They're (the Miras) family"
"Then understand they're mine (Eve) too."

BLURB:
Two hearts in the darkness…

Makenna James and Caden Grayson have been inseparable since the day they were trapped in a pitch-black elevator and found acceptance and love in the arms of a stranger. Makenna hopes that night put them on the path to forever—which can’t happen until she introduces her tattooed, pierced, and scarred boyfriend to her father and three over-protective brothers.

Must fight for love in the light…

Haunted by a childhood tragedy and the loss of his family, Caden never thought he’d find the love he shares with Makenna. But the deeper he falls, the more he fears the devastation sure to come if he ever lost her, too. When meeting her family doesn’t go smoothly, Caden questions whether Makenna deserves someone better, stronger, and just more…normal. Maybe they’re just too different—and he’s far too damaged—after all…

I admit I read this book because I was too curious. I read Hearts in Darkness, how two unlikely people met and bonded in the darkenend elevator they were trapped in. I was quite satisfied with the ending, because honestly, it didn't feel like a cliffhanger. Imagine my surprise when I found out book two was coming. So I had to see how they'll finish their HEA.

And one word. Disappointed.

It’s you and me, ‘til the end. In the darkness and in the light.

I loved Hearts in Darkness so much. Quite the contrary, I was just feeling deflated after reading Love in the Light. In this book, Makenna James and Caden Grayson are building their life together. Caden still couldn't believe his luck, that someone as amazing as Makenna would want him as a boyfriend. He's still too screwed up after the trauma of being trapped--the event that led to him losing his mom and brother.

Makenna James tries to reassure Caden that he's the only man she wants. Even if Caden is somehow too scared, too insecure. And what Caden fears might end their relationship for good, and maybe Makenna is not enough for Caden.

He was my boss, my brother’s friend, a Widower, an ex-felon, and a man I’d seen casually with a handful of women. But he was everything that gripped me, both the good and the bad. Worst case scenario if things turned awkward between us, I could go somewhere else. I’d gotten over epic heartbreak before, one more wouldn’t kill me.

After moving to Austin following six months of unemployment back home, Iris Taylor knows she should be glad to have landed a job so quickly... even if the business is owned by a member of the same motorcycle club her estranged father used to belong to. Except Dex Locke might just be the biggest jerk she’s ever met. He’s rude, impatient and doesn’t know how to tell time.

And the last thing they ever expected was each other.

But it was either the strip club or the tattoo shop.

… she should have chosen the strip club

A stand-alone. A rarity, actually, for me at least. Somehow, I always end up with semi-stand alone, a part of series that connects, but with different characters and different events. Not that I hate it, but Under Locke gave me no future expectations. I liked that.

“Babe, I've handpicked everythin' and everyone in here. I know what I want and I get what I want," he breathed. "And I keep what's mine.”

It started off somewhat shaky, unfortunately. Iris Taylor moves her entire life to Austin, and her brother got her a job at Pins & Needles, a tattoo shop owned by Dex Locke. Dex is a biker, part of Widowmakers MC in Austin, and overall a guy with jerk-ish tendencies. Right off the bat, he nearly makes Iris cry and says cruel things to her. Not totally unexpected. Things start to change when Iris's deadbeat father shows up and stirs trouble right in Iris and Sonny's doorstep.

BLURB:
From the author of the New York Times bestselling Bad Boys novels comes the first in a dark, sexy contemporary trilogy.

Is she strong enough to trust the most dangerous man she’s ever met? And is he strong enough to let her?

How would I describe myself? Well, I’m Muse Harper. I’m a twenty-something painter who loves red wine, quirky movies, and men with a fatal flaw. But that was before I met Jasper King. He became my fatal flaw. Eight months ago, I had a choice to make—abandon everything I’ve ever known to protect my family, or stay and risk someone getting hurt. I chose the former. My plan was working just fine until I found out my father had gone missing.

That’s when I met Jasper. A bounty hunter with the eyes of a tiger and the nose of a bloodhound, he was supposed to help me find my father. What I didn’t know was that meeting him was no accident. Hunting people isn’t all that Jasper does. And helping me was only part of his plan. I just wish I’d found out sooner, before my heart got involved. But even then, I don’t know if I’d have done things differently.

Now, I have another choice to make—trust the man that I’m falling in love with and hope that he’ll do the right thing, or run as far away from him as I can get.

I borrowed this book because I figured I need something 'dangerous'. Somebody recommended this book to me and I thought I wouldn't lose anything. So with a bit curiosity, I took a chance.

"Do you bite?"
"No," I whisper. "Do you?"
"Only if you ask nicely."

Not that I'd say I totally loved it. I liked Strong Enough just enough :) I've never read Leighton's Adult line, so the book fell into the okay category. Though drama is minimal, but it kept me glued to the book because I wanted to get to their ending.

Muse Harper is hiding. But when her father was incommunicado, she wanted Jasper King to help her find him. With one condition: she's going with him. Jasper always worked alone. He's one of the best bounty hunters with lethal abilities. He can protect Muse, but the thing is, he's also keeping a secret about who he really is, his past, and his relation to Muse's dad.

I never knew I had an Achilles heel. Because I never knew Muse.
Until now.
